Senior DHS official sent KCRW a statement saying that Vargas and her family are not being actively deported. The statement reads in part: “The family applied with USCIS for humanitarian parole on May 14, 2025. Vargas and her family have been approved to stay in the United States as their daughter receives medical attention."
A young girl in Bakersfield, who’s being treated in Los Angeles for a life-threatening condition, will get to stay in the country for at least a year after being told she and her family must self-deport.
